COEUR d'ALENE - Michael Hicks hit a two-run home run in the first game for Coeur d'Alene and Brian Howell singled to score Kris Jackson in the eighth inning of the second game for Lakeland, as the teams split a nonleague doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Ted Page Field.

Hicks homered in the third inning of the first game to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead early in a 10-8 win.

Lakeland scored on a fielder's choice to make it 4-1 after three innings.

Nick Nyquist extended the lead to 6-1 on a two-run double in the fourth for Coeur d'Alene. Nyquist scored three runs in the first game.

Lakeland scored seven runs in the final three innings, keyed by a two-run double by Blake Wrotenbery to pull the Hawks within 10-8.

Lakeland was the designated home team in the first game due to Thursday's game in Rathdrum against Coeur d'Alene being rained out.

After four scoreless innings in the second game, Howell scored on a passed ball to give Lakeland an early 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Wrotenbery hit a two-run double to score Kenny Cooper and Michael Bodak to go up 3-0.

Collin Richards tripled leading off the bottom of the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonny Plum for Coeur d'Alene. Devin Kluss had an RBI double in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2 and Nyquist singled to score Plum with the tying run in the seventh for Coeur d'Alene (5-2), which is scheduled to host Southridge in a doubleheader today starting at noon.

"I was very proud of the way my kids competed today," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "We were coming off a pretty poor performance against Lake City earlier in the week, so it was nice to see them make those much needed adjustments. We lost the first game, but they battled the whole entire game, never hung their heads, and played well."

Lakeland (3-4) is at Post Falls on April 8.
