Haynes resigns as Sandpoint

boys basketball coach

SANDPOINT - Tyler Haynes, a Coeur d'Alene High grad who coached the Sandpoint High boys basketball team in three stints totaling 11 seasons, resigned earlier this week.

Haynes played for his father, legendary coach Don Haynes, at Coeur d'Alene High in the late 1980s.

"There comes a road in your life where you have to take a right or left. It's been a great experience, but right now this is a time to focus on my family," said Haynes, whose wife Erica also teaches at SHS. "My wife and boys sacrificed a lot for me to do what I love, now it's time to sacrifice for them and help their dreams come true."

Haynes has spent 24 years as a high school assistant or head coach, starting as an assistant high school basketball coach at the age of 19 at Coeur d'Alene High - where one of his players was Kris Knowles, who went on to be head coach at Lake City, and is now athletic director at Sandpoint. Haynes coached the Bulldogs for one year in 1998, then from 2003-2007, and most recently 2009 to present.

In 2005, Haynes guided Sandpoint to state for the first time since 1978. The Bulldogs returned to state a year later. In 2009, Sandpoint notched its first victory at state since 1966.

The district plans to open up the position soon.
