DeHaas homer sparks Cd'A to win over Lake City

COEUR d'ALENE - Kolby DeHaas of Coeur d'Alene hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 Viking lead and Coeur d'Alene rolled past Lake City 7-1 in 5A Inland Empire League play on Tuesday at Lake City High.

In the bottom of the second inning, Lake City's Sam Slusser drew a walk with the bases loaded, scoring JJ Winger to cut the Vikings' lead to 2-1. But the Timberwolves left the bases loaded.

"Throughout the game, we got guys on," Lake City coach Travis Georgius said. "But we just couldn't get them in."

Sean Sutton allowed five hits, one run and struck out four for Coeur d'Alene (4-1), which plays Thursday at Lakeland.

Lake City (1-4) plays today at Lakeland.

ST. MARIES - Senior Dillon Michael threw a one-hit shutout as the Lumberjacks beat Priest River in six innings by the 10-run rule in nonleague play.

Priest River's lone hit came from Jesse Perkins, the second batter of the game, who singled to left-center field in the top of the first inning.

Michael, who threw just 72 pitches in six innings of work, struck out nine.

"He shut them down," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said of Michael. "After that hit, they didn't do anything."

Matt Smith drove in two runs for the Lumberjacks (4-0). Casey Nelson went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Of St. Maries' eight hits, four came from the 7-8-9 hitters.

"The bottom of our lineup did a very good job, which is good to see," Tefft said.

St. Maries, which won 13-2 at Priest River last Thursday, returns to action April 5, at home against Moscow's junior varsity.

POTLATCH - Jamie Lickfold went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the third inning, leading the Tigers past the Loggers in a nonleague game.

"I was really happy with how we got up with a lot of first-pitch swings," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. "But we started to coast with a lead and had a bad inning. I was happy to see that we came back from a bad loss and had a lot of focus in the first three innings."

Katie Malloy had three hits for Timberlake (1-2), which hosts an Intermountain League preseason tournament on Friday, facing Bonners Ferry at 10 a.m. and Priest River at 2 p.m.

ST. MARIES - Priest River scored six unearned runs in the fourth inning on one error and four hits, in a nonleague victory over the Lumberjacks.

"We got on their pitcher (early on)," St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. "She pitched well in the last four innings, she mixed up her pitches a little bit better."

Starting pitcher Jaycee McQueen allowed just five hits but struggled in the fourth for the Lumberjacks (0-4).

"She had four solid innings before the fourth," Bitterman said. "We've just got to play with some composure and a little focus."

Brittany Krampert had eight strikeouts for Priest River (3-0).

St. Maries plays April 5, in a home doubleheader with the Moscow JV.

SPIRIT LAKE — Randy Duclos (100-meter dash, 110 hurdles), Anna Gardom (200, 400) and Payten Rhodes (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) won twice for the Tigers, which swept the Wildcats in an Intermountain League dual at Timberlake High.

Timberlake will compete in the Christina Finney Relays on Thursday at Post Falls High starting at 2 p.m.

Kellogg returns to action on April 12 at the Kell Invitational.

"Jordan's match was outstanding because it was a marathon," Lake City coach Roger Keilig said. "It was just amazing that he pulled it out."

SPOKANE - Kyle Schneider won in straight sets and Cole Williams battled back to win in three for the Vikings in a victory over the Wildcats.

"We kind of moved some guys around a little bit and some guys play doubles that usually play singles, and it just kind of worked out," Coeur d'Alene coach Dan O'Connor said. "Both Kyle's and Cole's matches were fun to watch. Cole battled back to take the match, which was impressive and Kyle was dominant the entire time."

Coeur d'Alene returns to action at home vs. Sandpoint on April 9.

COEUR d'ALENE - Caitlyn McHugh rallied from a first-set loss and won for the third time this season - and the second time in singles - for the Vikings in the loss to the Wildcats.

Megan Mitchell, who normally plays singles, teamed with Lexi Carlsen for a straight-set victory at No. 1 doubles.

"Lexi's a great doubles player, so I'm just trying to find a partner for her that could work out (at state)," Coeur d'Alene girls coach Laura Taylor said.
