Sweetheart success

A fundraiser held last weekend to support a local summer camp for children with cancer raised $75,000.

Organizers of the second Sweethearts Ball, held Friday at The Coeur d'Alene Resort, say they doubled the profits raised last year at the inaugural event.

"This year was unbelievable," Jason Bondwell said.

He said 270 guests attended the ball, which included dinner, auctions and live music.

Bondwell said the generosity of the guests was remarkable.

"They weren't just there for an event," he said.

The proceeds will benefit young cancer patients and survivors who attend Camp Journey in Post Falls. In addition to the usual fun summer camp activities, campers have access to medical care from trained staff.

The cost to send a child to Camp Journey is $1,000, but donations, private sponsors and funds raised by the Sweethearts Ball make it possible for the kids to attend without putting any financial strain on their families.
