Chiefs lose in overtime

VICTORIA, British Columbia - Travis Brown scored on a backdoor pass 8:10 into overtime, lifting the Victoria Royals past the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 in the first game of a best-of-seven Western Conference playoff series on Saturday night.

Victoria took a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal by Ben Walker late in the period.

After a scoreless second, Riley Whittingham put Spokane on the board with a goal 2:22 into the third on an assist from Cole Wedman and Jacob Cardiff. It was Cardiff's first career playoff point.

Spokane finished 0-for-5 on the power play, getting outshot 33-27.

Eric Williams had 31 saves for Spokane.

Game 2 is tonight at 6:05 in Victoria.
