Work at Third and Sherman to wrap up today

| March 21, 2014 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Construction crews will wrap up today at Sherman Avenue and Third Street, and move one block north to Lakeside Avenue and Third on Monday morning.

Motorists on Lakeside downtown will be detoured around Third while intersection upgrades are made as part of the McEuen Park and Front Avenue reconstruction projects.

The work will transform Third into a two-way arterial between Front and Lakeside. Currently Third is one-way southbound along that two-block stretch. Traffic on Lakeside will be rerouted to Sherman or Coeur d'Alene Avenue at Second and Fifth streets.

The project includes sidewalk, street and traffic signal work. It will last five days, and Lakeside will re-open Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, McEuen Park workers have shifted to seven-day work weeks. With the opening of McEuen Park scheduled for May, the general contractor for the $20 million project recently expanded its schedule to include Saturdays and Sundays. That schedule will continue until the park is complete.

"We're going to get as many people out there as we can (on weekends)," said Bryan Taylor, president of Contractors Northwest, Inc. Weekend work will include landscape grading, concrete and structural work.

Meanwhile, the last section of sidewalk on the north side of Front Avenue along Fifth Street is nearly complete. The sidewalk will open Monday, along with 20 angled parking spots along that block.
