TROOPS: Answer the call for liberty

| March 19, 2014 9:00 PM

Why do we have troops around the world, most notably in Europe, Japan and Korea? What’s the point? Isn’t it to protect freedom loving people from those who would enslave them if they have the chance? The Russian Bear is hungry again! Are we going to protect Ukraine or not? Since when does the most powerful nation on Earth wait for NATO or the U.N.? Where western Europe can wimp out or Russia can veto any action.

As each crisis arises, we so-called war weary Americans declare that we’ll talk about it, but “absolutely no boots on the ground.” Well, what are those boots for?

In the mid-’50s we threatened nuclear war with China, in essence, if they didn’t “keep their grimy mitts” (my words) off two small islands eight miles off their coast! You see we had a retired general for president, and a secretary of state who practiced what was known as brinkmanship. China backed down.

I say we do whatever it takes. We send troops and armaments to Ukraine. It’s time we stood up to Russia and others who would take away the freedoms for which Americans have sacrificed so much.

We all remember the words of the young president who succeeded General Eisenhower in 1961: “Let every nation know whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.”
