Coeur d’Alene third at Shriver Cup

SPOKANE — Playing at the Jim Shriver Cup Tuesday at Manito Golf and Country Club, Alex Callahan was third overall with a 18-hole, six-over par score of 77, as Coeur d’Alene finished third with a team score of 322 on the par-71 course.

Lakeland finished fifth at 326.

Ferris won the tournament with a score of 307 and Mt. Spokane finished second.

Bryce Volking was second among Viking golfers with an 80, Jack Neal finished with an 83, Colton Gable came in with a score of 84 and Alex Odenthal shot a 93 under windy conditions.

“They’re shooting better,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. “I don’t have anyone back from last year. They’re gaining experience. It was tough conditions like it is in north Idaho, but we’ll adjust.”

Lakeland’s Derek Bayley shot a 77, Hayden Nosworthy a 79, Preston Roth an 82, Andrew Knight an 88 and Clayton Anderson a score of 91.

“With that caliber of talent over there, that’s really good,” Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. “We finished four strokes behind Coeur d’Alene. Coeur d’Alene is what you set your target at because they’ve been so good for so many years. It’s a long season to go, we’ve just got to keep working and improving.”

Coeur d’Alene and Lakeland return to action April 9 at the Moscow Invitational at the University of Idaho Golf Course.

TENNIS

Lewiston 9

Coeur d’Alene 3

LEWISTON — Caitlin McHugh of the Coeur d’Alene girls team won the No. 1 singles match won in straight sets, but Lewiston had the upper hand in sweeping the doubles matches.

Hailey Johnson and Joey Jeske won in mixed doubles in straight sets for the Vikings.

“I’m not too concerned about it,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Laura Taylor said. “Caitlin McHugh played really well for us at number one singles. The biggest thing for us is we’ve only been on the court three times and Lewiston has the advantage on us that way. But the rest of my team I’m not too concerned about. I threw a lot of players together who have never played together. We just need some court time. We have some good young players and they just need some varsity experience.”

As for the Cd’A boys squad, Kyle Schneider and Cole Williams downed Austin Zimmerman and Alex Geidl in straight sets, as one of the highlights of the day. Lewiston’s clean sweep in the singles matches keyed the Bengals’ victory.

“Lewiston’s always tough,” Coeur d’Alene boys coach Dan O’Connor said. “They had more time on their courts, because of the weather, which makes a difference. But I thought we competed well and I thought we jumped in the deep end and it was a good way to get the rust off.”

Coeur d’Alene plays at Post Falls on Thursday.
