OPINIONS: There's no room for hatred

| March 16, 2014 9:00 PM

I just read the letter by Cecil Kelly III comparing the horrific events in our American history which prompted the civil rights act and laws to homosexual lifestyle choices.

Since when is one’s choice in sexual partners equivalent to one’s skin color or ethnic heritage? I’m offended that lifestyle choices and skin color are considered by some to be morally equivalent.

I am further disturbed that a simple disagreement with choices like excessive drinking, adulterous behavior, thievery, homosexuality and many other choices are considered “hatred.” Just because I may disagree with something someone else does, doesn’t mean I hate him or her. I resent that such disagreements are categorized as hate.

We all have choices to make in how we live. We are all held accountable for the consequences of these choices, both good and bad. It is clearly wrong for me to discriminate against someone because of choices I disagree with. However, it’s just as wrong for people leading groups like churches to face jail time, fines or other penalties just because they wish to hold true to the convictions upon which these organizations were founded.

It appears to me that it’s acceptable to hate those who disagree with some politically correct ideologies. I guess Cecil is right. There will always be someone he can hate, particularly if his views are disagreed with. I guess, Cecil, that means you hate me. Too bad. I respect your right to your opinions even if I disagree with them. However, I don’t hate you for those opinions.
