Fit and Fall Proof leaders sought

HAYDEN - Do you want to reduce your risk of falls? Stretching and bending your arms and legs with a crowd of happy people can help you reach that goal. Panhandle Health District coordinates a group of volunteer leaders who teach Fit and Fall Proof classes.

Fit and Fall Proof classes need more volunteer leaders. Fit and Fall Proof is a program designed to strengthen older adults so they fall less. Fewer falls mean fewer injuries. Fit and Fall Proof provides seniors with moderate-intensity exercises in a group setting taught by fit older adults.

"Volunteers make the program," said Lisa Gardom, PHD's Fit and Fall Proof coordinator. "We need people to lead classes and people who can fill in for them when they can't be there."

Fit and Fall Proof classes are no cost for participants. Class leaders are volunteers. Classes range from five or six people to 25 to 30. The classes are up to an hour long and meet at least twice a week. About 23 classes are offered at senior centers, churches, fire stations and other locations in Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai and Shoshone counties.

The classes are so popular that class leaders are in demand. Volunteers who can lead classes long-term are needed. Volunteers who can fill in for class leaders during absences are also needed. People willing to step in as temporary leaders and travel to different locations would help ensure that the classes continue despite leader vacations and other absences.

PHD trains all leaders. People interested should be older adults able to do moderate physical activity. The training takes about six hours. In Kootenai County, the training is offered at the PHD office, 8500 N. Atlas Road. Gardom will arrange trainings in other counties on request.

Hundreds of seniors have participated in the no cost Fit and Fall Proof classes since they began a decade ago. The classes help seniors maintain an independent lifestyle, stay vital through good muscular strength and achieve the flexibility to bend and stretch. They also reduce the risk of falls by developing better balance, posture and stability.

The classes also provide an important social outlet for many seniors living alone.
