COEUR d'ALENE – Kootenai County Commissioner Todd Tondee announced Thursday that he will run in the May 20 primary election to retain his seat.

Tondee, 49, confirmed that he was considering running for county clerk, but said he still has some unfinished business as county commissioner.

"The county needs leadership that will listen to the people and give them the respect they deserve," Tondee said. "I think I have done that and I want to continue doing that."

Tondee, a Republican, started his political career as a Post Falls city councilman. He served in the position for three years before challenging and defeating former County Commissioner Gus Johnson in 2006.

Tondee is completing his third term as county commissioner.

Currently, Tondee will face Republican Tim Herzog in the May 20 primary race. The winner of that race will face Democratic challenger Bruce Noble in the November general elections.

Tondee is married, has two children, and lives in Post Falls where he also owns and operates a used car business.
