SWIMMING
CAST Crocs fourth: The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team (CAST) Crocs placed fourth overall in the recent short-course (25-yard) championships in Moscow
CAST, which trains at the Kroc Center, also won the spirit award for the fourth consecutive year at the meet.
CAST was led by high point winner in the 15-and-up division, Maggie de Tar, 15, who beat out two Olympic trialists to lead the charge for CAST. Maggie placed first in the 50 freestyle with a blistering time of 23.99 seconds, and followed that up with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.50. Maggie also was second in the 200 free, mile, and 400 Individual Medley (IM).
Sarah Nichols, the 13-year-old breaststroker who is currently ranked fifth in the nation for her age in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the nation in the 200 breaststroke, broke two meet records, placing first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Sarah's time of 1:05.46 in the 100 breast and 2:24.10 in the 200 breast are already garnering attention from college coaches. Swimming with CAST for just over a year, Sarah placed second in the 200 IM (2:13.76), fourth in the 400 IM (4:51.15), and fourth in the 100 fly (1:02.80).
Kade Hern, swimming in the15-and-up age group, took first place in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Kade swam to a time of 1:03.10 in the 100 and 2:17.77 in the 200 breaststroke to take top honors. Kade followed this up with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle and finished third in the high point competition.
Cole Curtis, 13, swimming in the very competitive 13-14 year old boys division, swam a veritable Ironman slate of events which included a fourth-place finish in the mile (18:23), third-place finish in the 200 fly (2:18.43), third-place finish in the 100 fly (57.38), fourth-place finish in the 200 IM (2:08.54), and second-place finish in the 200 breast. Cole finished fourth in the high point competition.
Other CAST swimmers placing in the top three at the meet included Kathryn Moon, 12, second in the 50 fly (30.46), third in the 50 free (27.98) and third in the 100 fly (1:08.58); Haley Pierce, 12, first in the 50 back (32.2) and second in the 100 back (1:09.23); Caleb Markowski, 11, third in the 100 fly (1:07.61); Karter Rasmussen, 12, third in the 50 back (32.27) and third in the 100 breast (1:20.33); and Nicole Rozier, 15, who finished third in the 200 breast at 2:36.45 and finished in the top eight in all of her swims for the weekend.
WRESTLING
The Buzzsaw Wrestling Club of Coeur d'Alene has begun practice for the spring season.
The club, for wrestlers in grades 2-12, meets Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Coeur d'Alene High wrestling room. Cost is $35 for a USA Wrestling card.
