COEUR d'ALENE - State Rep. Luke Malek, R-Coeur d'Alene, announced he is running for re-election.

"Tara and I are honored to have the support of our family, friends and the people of Coeur d'Alene," Malek said, referring to his wife.

"We are both very passionate about making our state a more prosperous, safe and enjoyable place to live. The fact that we have the opportunity to pursue this passion in the Legislature is humbling," he added.

Malek has made news for his pro-Second Amendment stance, and his position opposing a federal health insurance exchange in favor of a state-based model.

He has championed a full slate of criminal code changes, including a measure facing the floor of the Senate this week that would outlaw predatory use of private pictures sometimes called "revenge pornography."

He also has been outspoken in support of Idaho businesses, emphasizing that a strong economy is crucial to job creation, he said.

Malek is the director of legal affairs and project management at Heritage Health.
