Harvey, Jois tabbed for All-Big Sky team

CHENEY - With sophomores Tyler Harvey and Venky Jois included on the All-Big Sky Conference team announced by the league office, Eastern Washington University head men's basketball coach Jim Hayford certainly likes where his team is headed.

"To have two underclassmen recognized in the all-conference voting really bodes well for where our program is headed," said Hayford, whose team finished 15-16 overall and 10-10 in the league.

After ranking in the top 13 in four categories in NCAA Division I this season - including eighth with a league-leading average of 21.8 points per game - Harvey was selected to the All-Big Sky first team. Jois received honorable mention after earning the league's Freshman of the Year honor a year ago. Harvey is from Torrance, Calif., and graduated from Bishop Montgomery High School in 2011, and Jois is from Boronia, Australia, and Box Hill High School.

Harvey's combined ranking of 18th in 3-pointers per game (5th, 3.52) and 3-point shooting percentage (13th, 43.3) currently ranks second in NCAA Division I.

Jois ranked among the league leaders with averages of 13.4 points (12th), 8.0 rebounds (third), 2.5 assists and 1.6 blocked shots per game (third) while making 52.8 percent of his shots from the field (10th). He established a new school record for career blocked shots, with a current total of 115.

Nelson, Hodgins earn All-Big Sky honors

OGDEN, Utah - Lexie Nelson and Hayley Hodgins represented the Eastern Washington women's basketball team on the All-Big Sky Conference Team for the 2013-14 season, the league office announced Monday, Mar. 10.

Nelson was a first team pick for the second consecutive season while Hodgins was tabbed an honorable mention selection.

A redshirt junior from Butte, Mont., Nelson leads Eastern and ranks fifth in the Big Sky in scoring with an average of 16.1 points per game. She scored in double figures in all but four of EWU's 29 games, going for at least 20 points seven times. Her 467 points currently rank sixth all-time in EWU single-season history.

One of the most prolific three-pointer shooters in the nation, Nelson leads the league and ranks seventh nationally in three-point percentage, connecting on 44.7-percent of her shots from long range. Her 74 made triples rank second all-time in EWU single-season history, and she needs just three more to set a new school record.

Nelson also paces the Eagles in free throw percentage, shooting 86.1 percent from the line.

Along with Nelson, Hodgins has made Eastern a nightmare to defend for opponents, shooting 40.1 percent from three-point range, a mark that ranks second on the team and third in the conference. Her 64 made three-pointers currently rank fourth all-time in EWU single-season history.

Galdeira named To Pac-12 All-tourney team

SEATTLE - Washington State sophomore guard Lia Galdeira was voted to the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team after helping the Cougars advance to the tournament semifinal round for the second time in the last three seasons.

Galdeira averaged 25.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 2.3 spg and set the Pac-12 Tournament record with 75 total points, breaking Stanford's Nnemkadi Qgwumike's previous record of 71 in 2012. Galdeira also knocked down seven 3-pointers and went 18-of-25 at the free throw line.

Galdeira matched teammate Tia Presley with a game-high 31 points, and grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists and sank three 3-pointers in the 107-100 opening round over Oregon. WSU's 107 points set a tournament record for points scored. The Kamuela, Hawaii native followed with a game-high 28 points, seven rebounds, three 3-pointers and 13-of-16 at the free throw line in the 91-83 upset of No. 20 ranked and No. 2 seed University of California in the quarterfinals. Galdeira capped her tournament with 16 points, five rebounds and two steals in the 70-60 semifinal loss to Oregon State.

Galdeira is the second Cougar to earn Pac-12 All-tourney honors, Jazmine Perkins in 2012.
