Spring forward, check batteries this weekend

COEUR d'ALENE — It's an early indication that spring is on its way: Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend, specifically at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 9. Across the country, fire departments encourage residents to recognize the bi-annual time change ritual by changing the batteries in their smoke detectors.

"Our No. 1 goal is life safety, and having a working and clean smoke detector in your home helps us accomplish this goal," said Coeur d'Alene Fire Chief Kenny Gabriel.

Smoke detectors play a critical role in saving lives and preventing injuries caused by structure fires. An apartment complex fire recently in Coeur d'Alene caused serious harm to occupants. Firefighters said there were numerous non-functioning smoke detectors in the units that could have prevented those injuries.

"The best way to keep your family and pets safe is to have working smoke detectors in your home," Chief Gabriel said.

The Coeur d'Alene Fire Department will assist elderly people and those with disabilities change their smoke detector batteries. If you have questions or need assistance, contact the city's Fire Prevention Bureau at (208) 769-2245.
