It's not the Olympics, but Coeur d'Alene Symphony's National Young Artist Competition Concert offers fine arts entertainment with a competitive edge.

"This is a highlight of our concert season," said David Demand, artistic director and conductor of the orchestra. "The talent of the competitors this year was extraordinary and we anticipate an outstanding concert. The performers have selected repertoire that will display their musicianship as well as the skill of our orchestra."

Seven young musicians, winners of this year's competition will perform with the orchestra Friday March 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday March 15 at 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Drive, Coeur d'Alene.

The competition took place in January, with more than 100 performers making the final cut and coming from all over the country to vie for a chance to play with a full orchestra. Each winner will play about 10 minutes of a piece, so the variety of music is always wide.

This year the winners of the high school division were Sarah Hall from Arlington, Wash., and Jasmine Weiss from Orem, Utah. They will be playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2, respectively. In the college division, the winds and brass winner is Sara Benton from Eugene, Ore., who will be playing the Reinecky Flute Concerto; the strings winner is Rita Wang of Boston, Mass., playing Bartok's Violin Concerto No. 2; and Brenda Miller of Kent, Wash., is the piano winner playing Prokofieff Piano Concerto No. 3.

The vocalist winners this year are Arielle Nachtigal of Missoula, Mont., for the college division who will sing Addio Donde Lieta from Puccini's "La Boheme" and Mi Tradi Quel Alma from Mozart's "Don Giovanni." The professional division winner is Lara Lynn Cottill from Pittsburgh, Penn., singing Chi Il Bel Sogno from Puccini's "La Rondine" and Depuis le Jour from Charpentier's "Louise."

This concert is funded in part by contributions from US Bank Foundation, Jim and Jill Cathey, Dan and Kathryn Pinkerton, Bob and Diane Bittick, Dr. Elizabeth Welty, and Mark and Marlo Faulkner - all local music lovers who care about bringing great performances to Coeur d'Alene.

Tickets are $20/adults, $15/seniors, $8/youth and students with ID. Group and family rates available only at the symphony office. Tickets are available from the symphony office (208-765-3833), Great Harvest Bread, Burt's Music, at www.cdasymphony.org, or at the door as available.
