MISSIONARIES

Ed and Pamela Dittmar

Ed and Pamela Dittmar of Post Falls 4th Ward have recently been called to serve a mission in the Europe Area Office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located in Frankfurt, Germany. They will serve as "Preservation Specialists."

Elder and Sister Dittmar will be working with Family Search in the digitizing of ancient documents, some of which are very fragile because they are several hundred years old. These documents are usually housed in archives of city or county libraries, as well as in churches. Digitizing these documents will make them more accessible to researchers and genealogists and protect the actual documents from being handled, thus preserving them.

Images of records will be made available on a free searchable database. They will also preserve back-up copies to be stored in an archival vault made for this purpose. The church provides this service free of charge for both the church and the archives. The Dittmars will be a part of the team auditing the collected images from around Europe, for clarity and readability, to assure their usefulness to genealogists. They will then forward them to Salt Lake City for publication and storage.

Elder Dittmar is returning to the country of his birth and will speak his native language. He previously served a German-speaking mission to Austria as a young man. Pamela will be tutored in German several times a week over Skype while there. She also has German heritage so this mission will aid them in their personal quest to research their own ancestors as well.
