Five Trojans, three Viks in state 5A wrestling finals
NAMPA - The Post Falls Trojans advanced five to the 5A finals, and the Coeur d'Alene Vikings advanced three, as the state wrestling tournaments begin Friday at the Ford Idaho Center.
Two-time defending state champ Drake Foster (126 pounds) of Post Falls advanced to the finals, as did teammates Alius De La Rosa (120), Tyler Wolf (138), Seth McLeod (170) and Justin Farnsworth (285). De La Rosa and McLeod are also defending state champions.
"We had a great round in the semifinals," Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. "Everyone wrestled just really solid. We had a great round, and also in the wrestlebacks and just got better as the day went on. Justin Farnsworth had a great pin in the semifinals. Tyler Wolf had a great day and is wrestling really well and Seth McLeod is coming off an injury and had three pins."
Coeur d'Alene advanced Hudson Staub (182), Phoenix Duncan (195) and Matt James (285) to the finals. James will meet Farnsworth in the finals.
Post Falls has seven of its 14 wrestlers still in contention in the consolation bracket - including Cierra Foster (106), Casey Benton (113), Nathan Hill (113), David Booth (120), Lucas Bolster (126), Ryan Failor (195) and Elijah Bennett (220).
Coeur d'Alene has eight of its 15 wrestlers still in medal contention - including Kaleb Maciosek (98), Mikey Kelley (98), Mike Bingham (106), Drew Gorringe (132), Tristin Dunn (138), Damion Rawson (182), Danian Robinett (195) and Dakota Groves (220).
Post Falls, second at state the last two years, is in third place after the first day with 152.5 points, and Coeur d'Alene is fourth with 114. Defending champion Centennial is running away with 261 points, and Borah of Boise is second with 164.
"We've definitely have a great shot of catching Borah and moving into second," Reardon said. "The wrestlebacks in the morning are going to be crucial."
Lake City has four of its 10 wrestlers still in contention for medals - all in the consolation bracket - Dylan Woodworth (113), David Rusche (132), Corey Cook (170) and Zion Dixon (285).
"We had a good day," Lake City coach Corey Owen said. "We brought down 10 guys. Seven of them won a match. We lost some close matches. Corey and Zion got their tough matches out of the way and can hopefully get two wins (today)."
Killian Estes of Lakeland advanced to the finals at 182. Austin Hoobler (126) and Brandon Mailhot (160) lost in the semifinals.
They are still alive in the consolation bracket, as are Justin Wright (120) and Conor Shepherd (220) for the Hawks.
Lakeland is in ninth place with 55 points. Kuna leads with 244.5, and Bonneville of Idaho Falls is second with 188.
Returning state champion Blake Ivie of Kellogg made it back to the finals at 132. Teammate Casey Jerome (138) also made the finals, as did Preston Rhodes (160) of Timberlake.
Kellogg is in seventh place with 79.5 points. Timberlake is 12th with 44. Fruitland leads with 224.5 points, followed by Snake River in second with 119.
Aaron Kolar of St. Maries advanced to the finals at 138. The Lumberjacks are in seventh place with 71 points. Firth leads with 114, followed by Malad at 111.
