This burglar really needed a cigarette

COEUR d'ALENE - A burglar went to great lengths to get his nicotine fix Tuesday morning.

According to a Coeur d'Alene Police Department report, Lakeland Foodmart at 508 Northwest Blvd., was burglarized at 3:41 a.m. After the initial investigation was concluded, an officer determined the thief got away with a carton of cigarettes.

In the officer's report, he wrote that it was apparent someone had taken a storm grate from the corner of the parking lot and threw it through the front door.

"The front door was shattered and had a gaping hole in it," the officer wrote in his report. "There was shattered glass all over the entryway."

The store owner joined the officer inside the store and confirmed that the cash from an open register had not been stolen. After quickly examining his inventory, the owner told the officer he could not determine if any other items were missing.

When he reviewed the store's security camera footage, the officer said he could see one male approach at 3:41 a.m. and throw the storm grate.

"The male quickly moves to the cigarette display area and exits the business holding what appears to be a carton of cigarettes," the report states.

Although the officer said getting a detailed description of the suspect was difficult, he estimated that the man's height was between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet. He was wearing a Nike hoodie, white belt, black shoes and jeans, the officer wrote.
