• Stimson Lumber earns excellence in industrial energy honor

Idaho Gov. Butch Otter, who was in St. Maries on Monday for "Capital for a Day," presented a 2014 State of Idaho Award for Excellence in Industrial Energy Efficiency to Stimson Lumber Company of St. Maries.

The award recognizes the industrial companies that are exceptional state leaders in implementing energy efficiency at their local facilities. For Stimson Lumber, energy efficiency has become a source of both cost reduction and market advantage.

In 2013, Stimson Lumber completed a chip-conveyer system conversion, made upgrades to its waste management system and retrofitted the lighting at its St. Maries facility.

These retrofits not only reduced use by more than 980,000 kilowatt-hours (KWh) of electricity, but also resulted in a safer, more efficient workplace.

"With the timber industry being one of the largest economic drivers in northern Idaho, we need to aggressively pursue reasonable cost-effective energy efficiency," Otter said. "By pursuing these opportunities, we free up capacity on our transmission system, make energy available to help Idaho businesses expand, and we assist our mills in becoming more economically competitive."
