ASA: Great Falls wins 14U regional

COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene-based North Idaho Xtreme and the Coeur d'Alene Crush '99 both came up short in their attempt to bring home trophies from the 15-team ASA 14-and-under regional tournament which concluded Sunday at Ramsey Park.

Both were eliminated with losses in their first games Sunday morning. The Great Falls (Mont.) Selects won the championship, beating the Raptors 2000 of Vancouver, Wash., 8-7 in the championship game. The Spokane Crash '99 finished third, the Forest Grove (Ore.) Breeze fourth.

Winners bracket

Great Falls (Mont.) Selects 8, Raptors (Vancouver, Wash.) 7: In the championship game, Akusia Benton went 4 for 4 with a solo home run and four runs scored in the win. Kate Sagendorf added three RBIs.

With the tying run on second base for the Raptors and one out in the top of the seventh, Great Falls center fielder Shelby VanHemelryck raced into the gap in left-center and made a back-handed catch to take away a game-tying extra-base hit.

Great Falls Selects 15, Spokane Crash '99 6: In the semifinal game, Sam Payne went 4 for 5 and drove in two runs in the win, and Madi Payne was 2 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs. Meredith Clark hit a solo homer for the Crash.

Losers bracket

Forest Grove (Ore.) Breeze 13, Coeur d'Alene Crush '99 5: Sierra Gunderson went 3 for 4 with three doubles and four RBIs, and Kinsey Barnett was 3 for 4 with a double, two stolen bases and three RBIs in the win.

Brooke Bowers went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs for the Crush.

Raptors 14, North Idaho Xtreme 2: McKinzie Todd went 3 for 4 and scored three runs, and Alexis Morrison was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs in the win.

Raptors 5, Forest Grove Breeze 4: Lydia Dillon went 2 for 3 and doubled in the game-winning run in the seventh inning for the Raptors. Paige Stinson was 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

The Breeze finished fourth.

Raptors 15, Spokane Crash '99 11: McKinzie Todd went 3 for 5 and drove in four runs for the Raptors. Nicole Christianson was 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs, and Alexis Morrison was 3 for 4.

Sarah Peterson and Ashley Hammond each went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs for the Crash, who finished third.
