Plum, Kennedy spark Lums at tourney

| July 20, 2014 9:00 PM

BELLEVUE, Wash. - Jonny Plum and Colby Kennedy had two RBIs apiece, helping the Coeur d'Alene "AA" Lumbermen beat the Thurston County Saints 7-4 in pool play of the Baden Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Interlake High.

Kennedy pitched a complete game for Coeur d'Alene, which improves to 3-2 in pool play.

"Colby pitched really efficient," Coeur d'Alene coach Zach Clanton said. "Our outfield played very, very well and both (Devin) Kluss and (Stephen) Vaudreuil were running down balls that should have been in the gap. Jonny swung the bat really well and it was good to see Colby help himself out at the plate."

Coeur d'Alene (18-23), which was also scheduled to play the Mudville Pinnacle on Saturday, had that game postponed due to field conditions at Rainier Beach High in Seattle. The field turf surface had developed a tear near second base, according to Clanton, and was getting worse and was eventually deemed unplayable by tournament officials on Saturday.

"It was becoming a safety hazard," Clanton said. "Players were starting to have their cleats stick in it and it was becoming a concern."

The teams will make up that game today at 3 p.m. at Interlake High. With a win, Coeur d'Alene could advance to bracket play beginning later tonight.
