Shirley L. Crawford, 93

| July 16, 2014 1:03 PM

Miss Shirley’s earthly tour of duty ended in Post Falls, Idaho, on July 9, 2014.

Aunt Shirley began her journey on March 22, 1921, in Ypsilanti, Mich. During her remarkable life she was able to visit 47 of the 50 states. While working as an administrative assistant for the U.S. Foreign Service/AID, Shirley lived in Korea, Nigeria, Turkey, Columbia, India, Egypt, Afghanistan, Beirut, Lebanon, and Jordan. She visited most of the famous attractions/places throughout the world. She was called out of retirement twice to do duty in Belize.

Shirley shared stories of sitting on the side of her bed (and shaking) while the building shook from the bombs falling outside, of fishing in Ethiopia, of the wonders of Afghanistan, and of her on-going search for Jesus with great nieces and nephews, Rob Hubof, Lisa Willhite, and Claudia Saterfiel.

Shirley never had time or interest in owning a television, as she was much too busy traveling, fishing, reading, clowning, hiking, and studying. She had adventures galore and received recognition for her knowledge, voluntarism and baked goodies on several occasions. Shirley was Wallace, Idaho’s 'Citizen of the Year' in 2003, but she was truly a citizen of the world.

Now Shirley will join her parents, brother, Stuart, and her favorite aunts, to do some more traveling. She leaves behind brother, Allen (Hella), of Germany; nieces, Pat Hubof, of Clarkston, Wash., and JoAnne Miller, of Granby, Colo., nephews, Mike Crawford, of Spokane, Wash., and Richard Crawford, of Las Vegas, Nev.

Shirley was well cared for and loved by her Hearthstone family - Penny, Misty, Beth, John, Jerry, and special friend, John. Her great-great nephew, John-Michael Hubof, and niece, Elsa Hubof, brought special comfort and joy in Shirley's last days.

Post Falls’ English Funeral Chapel will arrange Aunt Shirley’s final journey back to Vernon, Mich., for burial.

Good-bye for a time, Miss Shirley. Enjoy your coming journeys, and we will gather in August to share memories of a life well lived.
