NHL Legends events net huge donation

| July 16, 2014 9:00 PM

The NHL Legends hockey game that took place last weekend at Frontier Ice Arena in Coeur d'Alene was more than a chance for North Idaho fans to watch former NHL superstars like Wayne Gretzky in action.

It was part of a fundraising effort that netted $330,000 to benefit Coeur d'Alene youth.

The hockey game held Friday and a private NHL Legends reception and dinner that took place Saturday were hosted by Discovery Land Company Foundation and Gozzer Ranch Golf & Lake Club. Gretzky has lived in the private Gozzer Ranch community near Harrison for six years.

Children's Village -a Coeur d'Alene nonprofit that provides a safe haven for Kootenai County youth who have been abused, neglected, who are homeless, or whose family situations have become dangerously unstable - will receive $300,000 to assist with expansion of its program.

"Since 2008, more than 400 children have been touched in some way by the generosity of the Discovery Land Company Foundation and Gozzer Ranch Golf & Lake Club," said Christina Hull, development officer for the nonprofit. "On behalf of the everyone here at Children's Village, including our amazing children, we thank you."

The $330,000 includes $90,000 donated by Discovery Land Company, developer of Gozzer Ranch.

In addition to the Children's Village donation, $30,000 of the funds raised will go to benefit Coeur d'Alene's youth hockey program, providing for needed maintenance to the Frontier Ice Arena and offsetting participation costs for youths in need.

Since 2008, Discovery Land Company Foundation and Gozzer Ranch have provided financial assistance to Children's Village through grants, donations and fundraising initiatives.

"Coeur d'Alene has truly embraced Gozzer Ranch and its members," said Michael S. Meldman, chairman and CEO of Discovery Land Company. "We couldn't be more proud to be a part of this tremendous community. Our member families and our staff are happy to lend our support to improving Coeur d'Alene for everyone."
