DOG: Arfee was just doing his job

| July 16, 2014 9:00 PM

Dog Gone! I am writing in response to the recent shooting of Craig Jones’ Labrador, Arfee, by a Cd’A police officer — while the dog was in the owner’s van.

I realize that this van was under investigation and I do believe that no crime was in progress. So why, if police officers felt that a dog protecting his owner’s property was aggressive, did they not take the time to call out Animal Control? Instead the officer fires into the van, kills the dog! I thought most adults knew that dogs tend to be aggressive while protecting owners’ cars and property? Is this not normal pet behavior?

I am very concerned that the officer who fired the shot did NOT give a hoot about the consequences of killing someone’s pet, which can in many cases be like losing a best friend/child. Important also to mention is, that a person may have been in that van! More collateral damage? Clearly, this officer fires first and thinks and cares last! What have I learned from this incident? Well, my aunt and I are seniors and we have canine companions who, if strangers were to enter our home, might seem aggressive in an attempt to protect. Now, we would crawl to the curb and call 911 for assistance rather than to invite a police officer into our home. DOG GONE IT!
