John William McCloskey, 99

| July 14, 2014 7:06 AM

John William McCloskey, 99, of Coeur d’ Alene passed away quietly and comfortably with family at his side Tuesday July 8, 2014 in Coeur d’ Alene.

John McCloskey was born April 1, 1915, in Richmond Heights, Mo. John lived a long, eventful life. He was the acting mayor of Santa Monica, Calif., for various terms, a successful business man and sat on the city council of Santa Monica for 12 years. Out of all his life ventures, some would say his biggest accomplishment was being an outstanding husband, father and grandfather. John was a devoted husband for 73 years. Aside from his wife Kathryn McCloskey, John loved traveling, cruises with his daughter, annual trips to Lake Crowley in California, his friends, his country, family, his Labradors, ice cream, his cat, every product Hostess ever made, jokes, Free PieWednesday at Shari’s and Bill O’Reilly.

John’s dislikes were a short list: exercise.

John will be greatly missed. McDonald’s will surely miss him considering he religiously dined in for breakfast there every Monday and Friday. Wednesday’s breakfast was reserved for the Breakfast Nook. More importantly, John will be missed by his friends, family and neighbors. They will miss his witty sense of humor, entertaining stories, great wisdom, charm, amazing singing voice, advice and heart of gold. John, we know you went to heaven to be with your wife. You missed her greatly here on Earth. Hopefully, she finally lets you have Twinkies for dinner up there…. You have asked her nicely for 73 years.

God has gained another angel. Although he is in a better place, John will forever be greatly missed and loved dearly. John McCloskey is survived by his two children Gene McCloskey and Kim Holmes; son in law John Holmes; daughter in law Gail McCloskey; five grandchildren Julie Castillo, Ryan Holmes, Katie Holmes, Gina McCloskey and Annie McCloskey; two great grandchildren Gus Castillo and Gabriel Castillo; and one sweet four legged companion Black Labrador Josie.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to St Pius X Catholic Church to fund their soup kitchen. John volunteered time to their cause.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014, at St Pius X Catholic Church, 625 East Haycraft Avenue, Coeur d'Alene, followed by a graveside ceremony at Riverview Cemetery. Also, there will be a reception in John’s honor located at his residence.

English Funeral Chapel of Coeur d'Alene has been entrusted to handle final arrangements. Please visit John's online memorial atwww.englishfuneralchapel.com.
