BIKERS: Follow rules of the trail

| July 13, 2014 9:00 PM

To the guy who clipped my bike wheel passing me on the trail near Higgens on Saturday (July 5) causing me to fall: Thank you for taking the minute to stop. Unfortunately, I was still dazed and couldn’t have this conversation with you.

In spite of what you said, it was not my fault. After checking behind me, I had passed two riders on the left and returned to the right lane. Witnesses told me later you had attempted to pass on my right as I was moving over, then you darted to the left, came up close to me and hit me. I was obviously on the far right because my head planted in the dirt at the edge of the trail. You accused me of weaving, and when asked why you didn’t sound an alert when you were passing, you said it was because you didn’t want to startle me. Huh?

To everyone: Bike trails are multi-use. Approach both walkers and riders slowly and alert them when you pass. Ride single file and keep to the right side of the trail unless you are passing. And most importantly — wear a helmet. That may be the best insurance you can buy.

Fortunately, I ended up with only scuffs on my face, hand, knee and sunglasses. Ironically, the only thing broken was the small bell I use to alert people that I will be going around them.
