Editor's note: This story, originally published July 10, has been updated to reflect a correction in the breed of dog initially reported by the Coeur d'Alene Police Department.

COEUR d'ALENE - A dog that police say lunged toward a police officer's face was shot to death Wednesday in Coeur d'Alene.

Officers responded to reports of someone in a van possibly watching young children in the downtown area in the parking lot behind 821 Sherman Ave.

While investigating the van, as the officer approached along the driver's side, a the dog reportedly lunged from the open driver's side window toward the officer's face, according to a Coeur d'Alene Police press release.

The officer fired one round, hitting the animal in the chest and killing it.

The officer was not injured. The van was unoccupied. Officers were trying to locate the owner of the van early Wednesday afternoon.
