Bayley reaches semis before

falling at men's amateur

PULLMAN - Former Lakeland High star Derek Bayley made it all the way to the semifinals before bowing out Thursday at the 113th Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur golf tournament at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

Bayley, the No. 49 seed and a Washington State signee, lost 3 and 2 in the semifinals to No. 4 seed Cole Madey of West Linn, Ore. Madey will face No. 14 seed James Beale of Auckland, New Zealand, in today's finals.

Bayley found himself down early to Madey, a position both players were familiar with throughout the championship. Madey held off Bayley's comeback bid after Bayley drove the 367-yard par-4 15th with a 3-wood. He drained his 20-foot eagle putt to pull the match to 2 down. Madey came back with birdie on the par-3 16th to end the match.

Earlier Thursday, Bayley defeated No. 25 seed Christopher Hatch of Mukilteo, Wash., in 20 holes in the quarterfinals. Bayley rallied after being 4 down at the turn.

"I just wanted to get to the back nine, because I know I could tear it up on the back," Bayley said. "I know I can make par from anywhere on the back."

Bayley fought back to win four of the next five holes and get back to all square after 14 holes. Hatch struck back, and the two traded holes until 18, when Bayley made birdie to force extra holes.

After both players made pars on the first extra hole, Bayley nearly reached the 362-yard par-4 second hole with his drive, then made an eagle 2 to claim a place in the afternoon matches.
