LITTLE LEAGUE

The Dodgers upset the previously unbeaten Giants 7-0 in the championship game of the Post Falls Little League upper minors division (age 9-10).

The Dodgers, down to nine players for the tournament after losing three players during the regular season, were 14-4 in the regular season, but lost twice to the Giants in league play.

LEGION BASEBALL

Coeur d'Alene U-16 Lumbermen: Keaton Howard, Daniel Gunnerson and Nathan Phillips combined on a two-hitter, helping the under-16 Lumbermen past Mead 2-1 last Tuesday night at Thorco Field.

Stewart Williams drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the fifth inning for Coeur d'Alene (15-4).

SELECT BASEBALL

Northwest Premier Baseball Club 17-and-under: The Premier went 4-0 in pool play at the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Wood Bat Classic at East Valley High in Spokane to advance to the Junior Division quarterfinals, where they lost to No. 2 overall seed Mt. Spokane.

Thursday in pool play, Coeur d'Alene's Tanner Toepke and Lake City's Kyle Rutherford both earned wins on the mound over Alberta's Ft. McCloud and East Valley, respectively. Friday's pool play saw Bonners Ferry product Vincent Bennett notch a 9-1 complete-game victory over Shadle Park. He allowed two hits, zero walks and struck out a season-high nine. Gonzaga Prep's Aaron Sunde also earned a complete-game win on Friday afternoon over British Columbia's Whalley, 4-1.

Premier led Mt. Spokane 3-2 in the fourth inning of Saturday's quarterfinal but the Wildcats eventually moved on to the semifinals with a 7-5 win. Central Valley's Connor Grytdal started on the bump for Premier and was 3 for 3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

The 17U squad travels to Kalispell, Mont., this weekend for the annual John R. Harp Tournament.

Northwest Premier Baseball Club 16U: The Premier remained unbeaten in their last 10 games by finishing the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene wood bat tourney 4-0-1. Relying on solid defense and timely hitting, Premier went 3-0-1 in Junior Division pool play, beating Great Falls 9-0 and Sunnyside 9-8 in extra innings on Thursday. Against Sunnyside, Mt. Spokane's Jacob Morgan finished the game throwing 4 scoreless innings to earn the victory in relief. Morgan, Trevor Luckey (Coeur d'Alene) and Cam Horn (Post Falls) each had three hits in the winning effort.

Day 2 of pool play saw Premier beat Okanogan 8-0 in the afternoon, setting up a big game with host West Valley in the nightcap. RJ Clancy (Post Falls) was 3 for 3 again Okanogan. Needing to beat West Valley to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals, Premier ended up tying 8-8 as the game was called in the 10th inning due to time limit. East Valley's Colin Spendlove earned the tough no-decision on the mound, throwing 7 2/3 innings and striking out nine.

In a consolation game Saturday against perennial power Freeman, the 16U team held off the Scotties for a 2-1 win. Lake City's Josh McGlathery allowed one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Premier will look to continue its unbeaten streak this weekend when they head to the Chuck Brown Memorial Tournament in Selah, Wash.

ASA SOFTBALL

North Idaho Xtreme '97: The Xtreme recently played in a couple of tournaments in Colorado.

The Xtreme went 4-1 at the Colorado Classic on June 27-28. They beat the Colorado Warriors 5-0, Utah Blaze Dynamite 12-3, the DC Jets 4-0 and Pro Swing Orange 4-0, and lost to Red Sticks Sports 007 of Louisiana 5-0. Xtreme second baseman Kylie Smith broke her ankle against the Louisiana squad.

The Xtreme then played in the Colorado Sparkler. In pool play they lost to the Blue Angels from Mississippi, tied the Texas Glory 7-7, beat the Nevada Comets 14-1 and beat the Athletics from southern California 11-1. That put the Xtreme in the second-seed bracket for tourney play.

There, the Xtreme beat the Colorado Stampede 5-4 and the Colorado Cardinals 5-0 to reach the quarterfinals, where they lost to the Utah Twisters 4-3 and the Minnesota Stars 3-2. Xtreme pitcher Breana Burke suffered a broken foot against the Minnesota squad, and is out 4-6 weeks.

The Xtreme is in the field for the 10-team Idaho state ASA16-and-under tournament Friday through Sunday at Ramsey Park.
