Pipe bomb found near Lakes Middle School

COEUR d'ALENE - A pipe bomb was found and neutralized at Lakes Middle School on Monday, and detectives are currently determining who placed it on the campus.

Coeur d'Alene Police Department officers and city firefighters responded to the school around 7:40 a.m. Monday after dispatchers received a call reporting a suspicious device, a press release from the department states. The device was found on the west side of the school and no students or staff members were in the building at the time of the incident.

Once officers were able to identify the device as a "small pipe bomb," the Spokane Bomb Squad was contacted. According to the release, the bomb squad quickly responded to the school and were able to contain and neutralize the device. Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance video taken at the school.

Law enforcement officers closed streets near the school for approximately two hours, the release stated. Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact the Coeur d'Alene Police Department at (208)769-2320.
