NIC announces

coaching changes

North Idaho College men's and women's golf coach Derrick Thompson has accepted a job with Iowa Western Community College.

"Derrick has been invaluable in building both men's and women's golf teams to a competitive national level," NIC athletic director Al Williams said. "He has a wonderful opportunity in his new position and we wish him well. The foundation has been set for a smooth transition to the NWAC (Northwest Athletic Conference, which recently changed its name from the NWAACC)."

NIC's golf teams move from the NJCAA to the NWAC in 2014-15.

This season, NIC's men's golf team was ranked seventh in the NJCAA final poll and finished 15th at the NJCAA tournament. The women's team was ranked 14th and finished 14th at nationals.

Thompson was also assistant professional at Avondale Golf Club in Hayden.

In other changes, Thane Jackson - who has been a part-time coach for the NIC men's basketball program the past two seasons - has been promoted to assistant men's basketball coach.

He assumes the position vacated by Corey Symons, who was promoted to head coach in June.

"Thane is a hard-working, energetic, young coach," Williams said. "He will be a great addition to the basketball staff."

Boise State to pay

$2.3 million in settlement

BOISE (AP) - Boise State has settled a lawsuit with the American Athletic Conference that was first filed a year ago claiming the university owed $5 million in exit fees.

The university announced Thursday that all claims have been dismissed and it has agreed to pay a negotiated exit fee of $2.3 million.

The lawsuit was first filed after Boise State backed out of joining the Big East Conference in 2012. School officials said at the time that the Big East wasn't successful in securing western members or a strong television package.

Boise State officials say that the conference has already been paid $1.6 million and will get $140,000 a year over the next five years. The money will come from $1.1 million in national television bonuses and $3 million from the Mountain West.
