KHS: Where there's smoke ...

| July 2, 2014 9:35 PM

As a lifelong volunteer for various nonprofit agencies, my heart broke to read the ‘My Turn’ article in today’s paper (Friday, June 27th).

I must once again ask, as I did at the open meeting a while ago, what in the world is Kootenai Humane Society’s President and Board of Directors doing?

To the KHS President who said “I’m driving this bus and if you don’t like it, get off” - I would say it appears, Mr. President, that you and the board have driven that bus into the ditch. As reported in the ‘My Turn’ article, there have been four Executive Directors, six shelter managers, and six volunteer directors. It appears the only thing missing is a partridge in a pear tree.

As any non-profit board member or President should know, volunteers are amazing individuals who freely donate their time and energy. They do so to help make the world a better place, and in return they ask only for the dignity, respect and open honest communication they deserve. It appears you have failed to provide these things to some very long-time dedicated volunteers.

It also appears from the ‘My Turn’ article that KHS’s financial house is still not in order. Folks donating money understand there are certain administrative fees; however, when only 8% or less is going to the direct care of animals. . . well, it’s time you step off the bus, Mr. President.
