CENTER: Friends - and livesavers

| February 9, 2014 8:00 PM

Lake City Center is a multi-use and service facility. They offer free tax help, noon lunch, Meals on Wheels, cards and other games, art lessons, a library and computer room, meeting space, and so much more.

But there is one service that is important to my husband and me: The Wednesday blood pressure clinic offered from 11 a.m. to noon. Professionals from different home health organizations volunteer to take our blood pressure every Wednesday. In December the nurse noticed a drop in my husband’s pulse, and high blood pressure. This continued for three weeks. She advised him to see his doctor. My husband passed it off and attributed it to just walking up the hill from the car to the building, and to old age. After all, he is 84. But my husband did finally see his doctor.

The doctor did many tests and an EKG, and advised him to see a specialist. Three weeks later they did another EKG and the doctor recommended a pacemaker for his heart. After a brief stay in the hospital, I now have a bionic husband. When your pulse drops below 50 — see a doctor.

Thank you, Jonie Anderson of Crest Home Health and Hospice. Lake City Center’s current blood pressure volunteers are from C.D.A Caring Hands.
