SWIMMING

CAST at junior nationals: Nicole Rozier, 16, and Sarah Nicholls, 14, of the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team attended the Speedo Junior National Championships last week in Federal Way, Wash.

The meet is for the fastest 18 and younger swimmers in the nation, with over 1,000 athletes attending, and featured several national age group records falling as well as an American record.

Nicole and Sarah combined to break four team records and three Inland Empire Swimming records over the course of the meet. Nicole started the meet by dropping two seconds in her 200 individual medley and making bonus finals that night. She dropped another .2 in the evening, finishing 19th overall and setting a team record.

Friday saw both girls swim the 100 breaststroke; Sarah broke her own IES record by dropping a half second in the race, finishing 59th. Nicole was just off her best 100 breaststroke time. In Nicole's 100 fly, however, she dropped a full second, finished 46th overall, and broke the Inland Empire record there as well.

The third day produced two more great swims, with Nicole knocking 4 seconds off her 200 fly time, breaking yet another IES record, and just missing out on a second swim by a few tenths. Sarah lowered her best time by two seconds in the 200 breaststroke and finished 40th overall.

The swimmers will have a short break before gearing up for their highest intensity training of the season over the Christmas break. Their next meet will be the Washington Open in January.
