PREP BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Post Falls opens with win

| December 6, 2014 8:00 PM

SPOKANE — Dalton Thompson had 18 points and five steals and the Post Falls Trojans opened their season with a 78-55 victory over the North Central Indians in the Border Clash on Friday at West Valley High.

“We got off to a good start, but I didn’t think we played a good second quarter,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We were playing good, then we relaxed. In the second half, we tried to play more even and steady.”

Jake Blakney had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Post Falls, which plays host West Valley tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Riley Smith scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first half for North Central.

“He made some difficult shots in the first half,” McLean said. “We were able to contain him and play better defense in the second half.”

“Central Valley’s a tough place to play,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kurt Lundblad said. “They’re a quality program and team. Our kids battled back and realistically, their defense affected our offense in the first half. We missed 13 free throws and some chippies around the rim, or it might have been a different game.”

SPOKANE — The Timberwolves had a chance with eight seconds left to tie or take the lead, but could not quite finish the deal in a nonleague game.

West Valley led by 10 with 3 minutes left in the game, before the Timberwolves clawed back to trim the deficit to 52-50.

“We didn’t capitalize and they made their free throws,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “The kids showed a lot of heart.”

West Valley shot 36 free throws and Lake City shot eight, and the Timberwolves did not attempt a free throw in the second half.

“The difference was we hit a dry spell, we struggled to score at the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth,” Reed said. “It’s early and we have a lot of stuff to work on. But we battled back.”

Senior wing Joe Pasquale led Lake City (2-0) with 15 points. Nick Hancock finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
