WARNING: Danger awaits marathon

| September 27, 2013 9:00 PM

Are you aware that the Lakes Highway District approved “The Hayden Lake Marathon” to happen this Oct. 19 at 7 a.m.? One resident found out about it and it has spread by word of mouth. We have not been informed about it through mail, email or any kind of media. We feel that residents have a right to know about it.

The following are our major safety concerns:

• Four feet of the lane toward the water will be designated for runners moving in opposition to motorists in that same lane. Motorists in the other narrow lane will be forced to straddle the yellow line in concert with opposing traffic or stop in the street to avoid motorists, runners or bicyclists.

• There will be no flagmen to control traffic around blind corners or anywhere around most of the lake.

• The four feet for runners will be marked with cones 100 yards apart (quote by race organizer).

• Hunting Season will be open.

• Mail delivery continues.

Contact the Lakes Highway District to express your concerns. (There’s a Hayden Lake Marathon website FYI.)
