Shirley Mae (Lyon) Goetzman, age 95, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away September 15, 2013 at Coeur d’Alene Homes. She was born April 9, 1918 in Pomeroy, Washington. She was the only child of Wilbur Eli Lyon and Ida Mae (Tewalt) Lyon. Shirley graduated from West Valley High School in Spokane and attended Washington State College. She lived in Washington D.C. during World War II and worked for the Federal Communications Commission. She met her husband, M. George Goetzman in Washington D.C. where they were married on May 15, 1942. George was a portrait photographer. They moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1946 where he opened Goetzman’s Studio. Shirley worked with him in his photography business. In later years, she worked at the Bible Book Nook in Coeur d’Alene. Shirley was a founding member of Coeur d’Alene Bible Church—she loved teaching Sunday school, attending church services, prayer meetings and Bible studies. She regularly corresponded with, supported and prayed for missionaries around the world. Her strong faith sustained her through difficult times. Shirley learned to play the piano as a young girl. She regularly played for chapel services at Union Gospel Mission and elsewhere. She loved to exercise, especially walking around the boardwalk at the Coeur d’Alene Resort and around Tubb’s Hill. She maintained an interest in current events and politics. One year she worked as a census-taker. Shirley is survived by her son, George Goetzman (Ann), Coeur d’Alene; her daughter, Martha Tornquist (Chris), Spokane; her granddaughters, Annalee Goetzman, Coeur d’Alene and Lisa Brodsky (Andrew), Longmont, CO; and two great-granddaughters, Nina and Lilah Brodsky. She is also survived by George’s step-daughters, Taylor Burgeson, Coeur d’Alene, and her daughters, Sonja and Rosie; and Jennie Lochelt (Murl), Portland, OR, and her children Elsie and Milo. The memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2013 at Coeur d’Alene Bible Church with Yates Funeral Home in care of the arrangements.
