Cardinal men post first shutout

| September 16, 2013 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - John Ray had a goal and an assist as North Idaho College posted its first shutout of the season, 2-0 over Shoreline (Wash.) Community College on Sunday in men's soccer action at Eisenwinter Field.

"We dominated possession," NIC coach Ken Thompson said. "The chances they had ... we're not real dangerous opportunities. I thought we had the run of the play. In the first half, we were too indirect, and in the second half we looked to utilize our speed a little more."

NIC (4-2-1) had given up 14 goals in its first six games.

On Tuesday, NIC's men and women travel to Port Angeles, Wash., to play Peninsula College.

First half - 1, NIC, Shane Stanley (John Ray), 15:00. Second half - 2, NIC, Ray (Rodger Bucknor), 61:00.

Shots on goal - Shore 10, NIC 10.

Saves - Shore, Angel Cruz 4; NIC, Tanner Jones 9.

COEUR d'ALENE - The Cardinals (2-4-1) lost their third straight game as Negin Amini of Shoreline scored the game's only goal in the 74th minute at Eisenwinter Field.

On the play, NIC keeper Whittni Mundel came out to the left edge of her penalty area to take the ball, but Hayley Warren knocked the ball off her and then passed the rebound to Amini, who hit the long outside shot into the open goal."

"I felt we didn't play our best soccer today," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "We didn't finish the four or five good chances we had on goal and they capitalized on one mistake we made in the second half. Emilee Cordon had another good game in the attacking midfield role and I thought Audrianna Woods did a nice job against their center forward."

First half - none. Second half - 1, Shore, Negin Amini (Hayley Warren), 74:00.

Shots on goal - Shore 8, NIC 13.

Saves - Shore, Melissa Schuetze 5; NIC, Alex Rodriguez 2, Whittni Mundel 1.
