COEUR d'ALENE - Senior defender Matt Hulquist tied a school record for goals in a game with five as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings defeated the Lewiston Bengals 5-1 in their 5A Inland Empire League opener on Saturday at Coeur d'Alene High.

"Matt had a huge match no doubt," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Lake said. "I thought as a team that we played really well. Even though Matt scored all five, everyone played well from the front to back line. We played with a lot more fire and intensity. Lewiston is playing really well this year and they've got it turned around. They're not the team of yesteryear."

Hulquist tied the record, also held by Adam Borsheim - who set the school record against Bonners Ferry in August of 2010.

Devin Kohles and Braden Ridgewell had two assists each for Coeur d'Alene (5-0-1), which travels to Moscow on Tuesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Ryan Swallow scored the game's only goal on a free kick in the 68th minute, lifting the host Timberwolves past the Bears at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

"My two free kick guys weren't in the game, and the guys looked at me like, who's going to take the kick?," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "I said 'whoever wants to take it,' and he stepped up."

Swallow sent a low screamer - perhaps a foot off the ground - through Moscow's four-player wall. The kick caromed off the inside of the far post and into the net.

"I don't know how it got through there," Beadell said.

Lake City has scored just six goals in four games, but is off to a 4-0 start.

"Right now, we can't buy a goal," Beadell said. "We're putting guys in great situations. You never know how many chances you're going to get. You've got to take advantage of them."

SPOKANE - The Trojans dropped their first game of the season, falling to the Bullpups in nonleague action.

It was the Trojans' first loss since they lost on Oct. 27 to Lake City, in last season's 5A state championship game at Coeur d'Alene High.

"It was a great game," Trojans coach Briggs Anderson said. "It was our first time on turf. It was 90-plus degrees. Gonzaga took it to us, they moved the ball really well. I have been really hard on the girls all week with conditioning and we were tired. They got punished."

Post Falls goalie Sam Runkle made six saves.

"When we allowed a goal Tuesday against Sandpoint (in a 4-1 win), Sam Runkle allowed her first goal in nine games, going back to last year's Region and state playoffs," Anderson said.

The goal came in the 20th minute of the game.

"It was a team breakdown in the middle of the field," Anderson said. "They snuck through and had a great shot from inside the 18-yard line."
