NIC: Wrestling with a tribute

| September 11, 2013 10:35 PM

I would like to shed some light on the North Idaho College Wrestling program for the outstanding work done in our community. Head Coach Pat Whitcomb and Assistant Coach Keri Stanley make this a priority. I read about the We Care Program which involves the distribution of free school supplies to the youth of our community. This is the most recent of many community service projects that the 14-time National Championship Wrestling Program has supported.

Proving their commitment to education, they have donated more than 11,000 new books to first-graders through the Shirley Parker Reading Program. Education isn’t their only focus, though. Over the past three years, NIC Wrestling has donated more than $6,000 toward breast cancer awareness by selling T-shirts from their We Care Program. During their December Tri-State Tournament, they raffled off an iPad for $600 and donated the money to The Press Christmas for All fund. These programs make the coaches and the team amazing role models for the nearly 700 young athletes that come to North Idaho College to attend wrestling camps each summer.

In a world where one sees articles about athletic programs in and out of trouble, it is refreshing to hear about all of the good work the NIC Wrestling team is doing. Instead of fundraising just for their own program, they fundraise for the good of the community. I would like to encourage everyone to support NIC Wrestling by purchasing a We Care T-shirt, donating to help fund the Shirley Parker Reading Program, go to a match or even just say thank you when you see the coaches and wrestlers for their continued support of our community.

Thank You NIC Wrestling!
