NIC's Robinson named SWAC player of the week

North Idaho Cardinal volleyball's sophomore libero and captain Russia Robinson has been named the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Week for Sept. 9.

Robinson was instrumental in the Cardinal's successful tournament at College of Southern Idaho this past weekend. Robinson, a native of Hemet, Calif., recorded 107 digs (6.69 digs/game), four aces and six assists during tournament play this past weekend. The 107 digs in the four matches was highlighted by a 40 dig performance in the Cardinal's exciting 3-2 win over No. 11 ranked Hutchinson College on Friday. The Cardinal finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, including wins over Hutchinson College, No. 7 ranked Miami-Dade College and Laramie County CC.

"Russia is well deserving of this recognition," Cardinal head coach Miles Kydd said. "She has played at a high level in every match this season and we rely on her steady play, great defense and leadership, and will continue to rely on Russia throughout the 2013 season."

Shock to host first 2014 mini-camp tryout

SPOKANE - The Spokane Shock will host their first mini-camp tryout in preparation for the 2014 AFL season on Oct. 19 at the Shock Facility located at 3212 N. Eden Road in Spokane Valley. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with testing led by Shock coaches and staff starting at 9 a.m.

Participants will be tested in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle and broad jump. Afterward, Shock coaching staff will lead position drills and 1-on-1's. The workouts will be conducted on an AstroTurf surface so cleats will not be permitted on the field. Participants should wear running, training or basketball type shoes and workout attire. Each participant will receive a shirt on the day of the mini-camp.

Registration is currently open online via shock.mycustomevent.com where participants will receive a $15 discount if registered prior to Oct. 16. Registration will be available on the day of the mini-camp one hour prior to the start of testing and drills from 8 to 9 a.m. at a cost of $100.

Spokane Chiefs veteran Gow attending NHL camp

SPOKANE - Reid Gow of the Spokane Chiefs is attending NHL camp with the St. Louis Blues. He is one of 126 Western Hockey League players who have been invited to attend NHL training camps in September. All of the 126 players attending NHL camps are eligible to return to the WHL for the 2013-14 season.

Of the 126 WHL players set to attend NHL training camps, 85 were selected in the NHL Draft and 41 are free agent invitees. 37 of the players who are attending NHL camps have been signed to NHL entry-level contracts.

All 22 WHL Clubs will send at least one player to an NHL training camp. The Edmonton Oil Kings boast an impressive 13 players who will attend NHL camps, which is the most of any WHL Club. In addition, the Portland Winterhawks will send 12 players to NHL camps, and the Medicine Hat Tigers will see 10 players attend NHL training camps.

Each year, WHL graduates make up a significant percentage of players who play in the NHL. In 2012-13, WHL graduates accounted for 20 per cent of all players who played at least one game in the NHL.
