Defense fuels runaway Lake City win

| September 7, 2013 9:00 PM

KENNEWICK, Wash. - One week after giving up 63 points in their season opener, the Lake City Timberwolves gave up just 10 and pitched a shutout in the second half of a 42-10 victory over the Kennewick Lions in nonleague high school football Friday night at Lampson Stadium.

Cory Cook had a key interception in the first quarter for Lake City (1-1), and Walker Jones, Brandon Dotson and Zach Weadick had fumble recoveries for the Timberwolves.

"Our defense kept us in the game the first half," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "A week ago, we had seven guys on defense who were starting their first 5A football game. There were a lot of nerves, and we probably played one of the fastest teams in the state. This week, they worked hard, and bought in to what we needed them to do."

Lake City committed all four of its turnovers in the first half, trailed 10-6 at halftime, then scored 36 unanswered points in the second half. Quarterback Tucker Louie-McGee ran for two second-half scores.

"In the second half, we finally got a little rhythm going on offense," Troxel said. "We gave our quarterback a chance to make plays."

Lake City plays host to Hillcrest of Idaho Falls next Friday.
