Lake City knocks off Sandpoint in opener

COEUR d'ALENE - Madi Farrell had 13 kills, Natalie Taylor 12 and Haile Watson 11 as the Lake City Timberwolves beat the visiting Sandpoint Bulldogs 22-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-21 in the season opener for both teams Thursday night.

Brittany Gay had 28 assists and 10 digs for Lake City. Watson added six blocks and Farrell and Kasey Widmyer each had two digs.

"We played a great match for our first time out," Lake City assistant coach Laura Tolzmann said. "We had first-game jitters and it was nice that we overcame that and played a consistent match."

Lake City plays at Lakeland on Tuesday.

Post Falls

LEWISTON - Brenna Meehan had six kills and six assists for the visiting Trojans, who came up short in a 25-17, 25-10, 25-22 loss to the defending state 5A champion Bengals in the season and 5A Inland Empire League opener for Post Falls at Booth Hall.

"I thought we passed serve well, and I thought we served tough," Post Falls coach Willow Hanna said.

Amy Booth had six digs, Shayna Allert three aces for Post Falls, which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

Cd'A Charter

COEUR d'ALENE - Shorthanded Coeur d'Alene Charter could not quite get on the winning wagon, in a 25-20, 25-9, 25-13 nonleague loss to Mullan at Holy Family Catholic School.

The Tigers won their season opener.

"We were missing two of our main players," Cd'A Charter coach Krista Brand said. "We came together fairly well and we're looking forward to getting all of our players back."

Anna Verhaeghe had four kills for the Panthers (0-3). Stephanie Kociela had four aces, Nadia Ancker five digs and Libby Goodwin two assists.

Sydney Koenig had 10 kills and four blocks for Mullan in its season opener, and Charli Sadler had 10 assists.

Cd'A Charter plays at Wallace on Tuesday.

Mullan plays at home Tuesday against Clark Fork.

Kootenai

HARRISON FLATS - Due in part to missing 14 serves, Kootenai lost its season opener 25-19, 25-13, 25-16, to the visiting Kellogg junior varsity.

"We missed 14 serves tonight and you can't win matches if you miss that many serves," Warriors coach Jessica Hammond said. "I think we need to get back in the gym and work out some of the kinks we have."

Kayelee Carman had nine assists for Kootenai. Jenna Karpinski had two kills, while Allison Short came up with two digs and two blocks.

Kellogg's JV saw Jordan Schwartz produce four aces and two kills. Rebekah Zufelt had three aces. Kadree Wood added five aces.

On Tuesday, Kootenai hosts Lakeside.

Pullman Christian

COEUR d'ALENE - Sarah Ployhar served up eight aces and had five assists as North Idaho Christian School topped Pullman Christian in Mountain Christian League play, 25-14, 25-16, 25-0 at Venture High School.

Liz Bookamar paced the Royals offense with five kills and Maura Lund anchored the back row with six digs.

North Idaho Christian plays Monday in Post Falls against Genesis Prep.
