WINNERS: Games offer perspective

| October 27, 2013 9:00 PM

Lori Macklin was lifted high in the air by 6-foot-l0-inch NIC basketball player Nate Rathbun; she launched the ball toward the basket, the ball rolled around the rim, then dropped in, to the thunderous applause of hundreds at the North Idaho College gym for the Special Needs Basketball game on Oct. 23.

Once again, this exciting event was sponsored by Real Life Ministries. There were four teams consisting of some 40 special needs players ranging in age from 8 to 40.

The entire NIC basketball team was there to render assistance, give high fives, encourage and clap for these heroes who have conquered more obstacles than many of the rest of us have. I think the NIC players were having at least as much fun as anyone else. As I watched the games unfold, I saw great dribbling, some good shooting and kindness. Somehow my recent battles with vertigo, sleep apnea and skin cancer seemed less important.

The Bible says “man looks at the outward appearance, while God looks at the heart.” Matthew 20:16.

The game commenced with each player running through the tunnel, surrounded by smoke and applause, as each player was introduced. There were charming cheerleaders, and an awesome pep band from Lake City High School. Good sportsmanship was in abundance.

At half-time we were entertained by six jugglers from Sorensen School; this school has a tremendous program for many young people.

Frankly, I am weary of reading each day about when the next government shutdown will be or about the latest drive by. There are many good things going on in this town, generous people who improve their own lives by extending a loving hand to others. Special needs basketball was one special event.
