Charter girls win district title

| October 20, 2013 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Mary Nicklay scored a goal in the first half and assisted on another to guide the Coeur d'Alene Charter Panthers past the Bonners Ferry Badgers 3-0 in the 3A District tournament championship game at Community United Methodist Field on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams had already qualified for state.

The game, originally scheduled for noon at Rotary Field in Rathdrum, was moved to Coeur d'Alene due to a scheduling issue between officials and use of the field.

"Everyone got all warmed up and then had to wait around for the officials to show up," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Dave Baxter said. "Once we had to leave Rathdrum, Bonners Ferry was very gracious to let us play it at our home field."

It is Coeur d'Alene Charter's first district title in its second year as a program.

Brooklyn Cunnigham and Katie Baxter also had first-half goals for Coeur d'Alene Charter (12-3-3), which opens play at its first state 3A tournament against Filer (13-4-1) on Thursday at Vallivue High in Caldwell.

Bonners Ferry opens with Marsh Valley.

RATHDRUM - Jake Tremble scored two second half goal to lead the Badgers past the Lumberjacks in the title game of the 3A District 1 tournament at Rotary Field.

Bonners Ferry opens the state 3A tournament on Thursday at Vallivue High in Caldwell.

Cody Posselt, who was named the Intermountain League co-MVP, along with Tremble had 11 saves for St. Maries, which finishes 8-7.

"The boys came out really good in the first half," St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. "Then, we had our center back (Victor Grogan) turn his ankle right before the half and he couldn't go and we just didn't have the horses to compete with them. We had three on the all-league team (Grogan, Ryan McNulty and Jesse Suchoski), and by the end of the match, they were all on the bench with injuries. Cody had a heck of a game."

First half - none. Second half - 1, BF, Cameron Woods (unassisted), 43:00. 2, BF, Jake Tremble (unassisted), 54:00. 3, BF, Tremble (Tucker Dirks), 65:00.
