SCHOOLS: One size doesn't fit all
This is a response to the Guest Opinion article (Norcini) regarding public schooling (Nov.16). General comment: Writing about broad shortcomings in something like education is easy. Being accurate is difficult.
Paragraph 1: Check facts first. And, make sure comparisons are correct.
Paragraph 2 and 6: These sections seem contradictory. If a writer urges parents to be involved and helpful in their child’s public school, she shouldn’t reveal she gave up on public school and placed her children in private school.
Paragraph 4: The writer claims that “schools no longer teach wisdom, values, principles,” etc. I’m just wondering if wise people actually learned their values from public school or from somewhere else like home.
Paragraph 5: The writer begins, “Today many schools no longer ...” In the interest of accuracy and driving the point home, perhaps the writer could list, say, three schools, and support her point with specific details of her observations of classrooms.
Finally, it’s wonderful that the author has found a school that will provide her children with the specific style of education she wishes for them. As for myself, my children attend Lakeland public schools, and I couldn’t be more satisfied.
