LEGACY: Not all on Sandi's plate
This is in response to Laurie Lyons letter to the editor: I didn’t read Terry Beckford’s My Turn, but if it is anything like your letter, I didn’t miss much.
You rant about Mayor Bloem’s “legacy” then go on to list the things you think the city should be doing. I looked over the list and voila! I discovered that you are so misinformed about the way our government is organized that it is embarrassing.
Let’s see; 1. New large jail facility. That is a COUNTY jail, not a city jail, the city does not and should not pay for it. 2. Larger centralized courthouse; again, it is a COUNTY court, not a city court, not the cities responsibility. 3. Parking garage for said COUNTY courthouse, again not a city responsibility. 4. Sports arena/complex, that would be one for private enterprise, not the city. 6. Vo-Tech campus for North Idaho College. North Idaho College is a separate taxing district and funded by tuition, state funds and property taxes, not the city.
That leaves us with the sewage plant and McEuen Park. Somehow, I think the city can handle both. Your comments remind me of a lady who approached the Chief of Police in Los Angeles in the early ‘90s and told him that she wanted him to work on jobs for the local youth to keep them out of the drug trade. Not his job! You need to go back to school and re-take the Government course.
