PLAY: Bravo to CHS theater
Contrary to a recent opinion I read in The Press, I was quite impressed by the Coeur d’Alene High School drama department’s production of “Romeo and Juliet.” I found the production, the set, and the makeup to be impressive and very imaginative, and the acting to be strong.
Coeur d’Alene High, and all of us, are truly lucky to have someone like Jared Helm directing the drama department. The “Romeo and Juliet” production had PG-13 elements, to be sure. But Shakespeare was a PG-13 (at least) author, and frankly, I think he would have enjoyed seeing this interpretation of his work, as well as the 1996 Baz Luhrmann movie version, neither of which was a right-off-the-pages interpretation.
We are all lucky to have several outlets in the area for the performing arts, including Coeur d’Alene High School, Lake City High School, Lake City Playhouse and Christian Youth Theater, all of which do excellent work. I might suggest that those who disapprove of a given type of theater try another. CYT, which did a highly enjoyable run of “Beauty and the Beast” last fall, began their run of “American Tall Tales” this weekend at the Kroc Center.
