SPORTS: Complex a simple necessity
I am writing this letter in support of the proposed sports complex at Riverstone in Coeur d’Alene. As the head women’s basketball coach here at North Idaho College, I can’t emphasize enough the need for more athletic facilities. Currently, we have one court which is being shared by both basketball teams, volleyball, wrestling and all our outdoor sports when the weather doesn’t allow them to practice outside.
In addition, the gym court is used by physical education classes and intramural sports here at NIC. Each team barely receives a two-hour block for practice a day. There is no time for individual skill improvement which the players so drastically need. In the summer, our facility is in constant demand, and it is not always possible to receive a week to dedicate to running a youth camp. This has a huge impact as it provides important fundraising for us as well as a way to impact the youth of the region in a positive way.
Our current facility here at North Idaho College has served its purpose well, but it is outdated and is inadequate for hosting competitions at this time. Our locker room facilities are not up to par for either the home or away teams. The lower level floor seating is not conducive to keeping the playing floor clean and dry during the winter months and has already proven to be dangerous to our players. In addition, the current floor is not even regulation size. The list goes on and on as to why we are in need of a larger and modern additional facility.
Coeur d’Alene has become a hub of activity in recent years. The city itself is in need of a facility which can bring economic impact to the area. A facility that can host large competitive youth tournaments in every sport as well as other events for the community such as concerts would be a huge benefit for the region.
